Game Boy Color OLED Modification
Probably the best aftermarket screen I've seen for any of these older portable handhelds. I hope to see more OLED screen mods available to other handhelds like the Game Boy Advance.

Follow Up: Steam Deck OLED Audio Issues
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.5 месяцев назад
After the last investigation, I decided to follow my own advice and RMA my unit as well. I was curious how Valve has resolved this issue. It appears they have made a revision to the audio board which they have their 3rd party repair centres supplied with and ready to fix. I recommend going through with this RMA since (at least in North America) they are offering this for free. It only costs you...

      @@SamCampbell I just googled it, it's a single pole single throw switch. I can use these instead and carve out the housing on a plywood. I can do the soldering myself. Sanwa buttons are too overpriced/expensive, where I can get mx switches for 0.60$ each.

    I purchased my 512GB OLED less than a month ago and it has this issue. I am in talks with Valve support but decided to order the replacement OLED audio board from IFixIt for $25. There is a review on their page saying it fixed the issue for them. I primarily use BT / 2.4GHz dongle headphones with mine and like to tinker, so I'll see if this resolves and compare the boards. That seems like a promising route to go for those unwilling to RMA.

    Well some chips were at the end of life, Kevin did say he wants to or is planning on making a new version but being occupied with analogue as well as collaborating when the nes & snes classic came out his hands & time have been tied up. I do believe that he will revise to update the hi def nes for a second version. He would be dumb not to with all the new technology coming out along with 4k & 8k becoming more popular. That's more money to be made. I feel you on him strong arming the community with it not being open source but granted he did take a lot of years studying and reverse engineering to unlock all of its potential for us to enjoy. A small price to pay but hey I would pay it just like most who did because its a lot of work and knowledge behind the project especially with the high amounts of compatability to deal with.

    Great build! Did you solder the wires directly into the Raspberry Pi? Or did you crimp terminal plugs in the cables? I'm kinda new to electronics and I've found some builds that use the terminals and others that don't detail the soldering too much, so I don't know if the plugs are necessary for the board to work.

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell 3 месяца назад

      Thanks! I soldered them directly to the board. If you want to make it easier to replace switches or cables in the future then terminals will make that process simpler, but they're not required.

    I completely eliminated the headphone noise on my OLED deck by using the electric insulation tape trick, but one thing I did differently that I haven't seen anyone mention yet is that I used two layers of electric insulation tape. I just folded the insulation tape over. I don't know if that will make the difference for any of you but it worked for me. My headphones are Timeless 7hz.

    Sadly this modification is no longer sold. It was developed and manufactured by one man, Kevin Horton, who works for the FPGA emulation company, Analogue. These are the same creators of the Analogue Pocket, etc. It is unlikely that he will ever manufacture or publish his works as it is likely a conflict of interest with his current employment at Analogue. They would much rather you buy their product, the Nt Mini, than this modification which Kevin would solely benefit from.

      Hey there, unfortunately because the design of this modchip is a completely proprietary design by Kevin Horton and he refuses to publish his work as open source for others to iterate on and manufacture, the supply chain is entirely bottlenecked by one man and will likely never be made again.

    Thank you Thank you Thank you for actually following up. Like 3 RMA reddit posts I read had the OP say, I'll follow up, They never did. So my HP daughter board, has a W in the trapezoid. No clue what that means is it's not a batch number. I agree I should RMA it for free, it is a flaw and Valve knows. But I only use HPs when I'm playing online Multiplayer with my friends, The rest of the time is usually speakers. Maybe I will RMA it when Stellar Blade or FF7R rebirth comes out and I dust off my PS5. As is, it's a minor annoyance and I use my deck every single day so it would feel lonely with out me. 😢

    This is very interesting to me as on your test I can very clearly still hear the noise after RMA. Maybe it's not quite as bad as before but it's still there. I had the same issue with mine and sent another ticket saying the problem is still not fixed. The fizzing is not audible when using an external dongle DAC so I know there must still be a problem with their replacement board.
